Case studies on deaf people's experiences with music + More

I began looking into how deaf children are treated in schools and the activities that are open to them.  National Deaf Children's Society regularly comes into contact with parents who are unhappy with the education provided to their deaf children. One case study from outline some of the experiences parents of deaf children encounter. "I feel that the education system is lacking for deaf children. Teachers are often unsure of how to ‘teach’ a deaf child, often leaving them to their own resources. I decided to explore a few case studies on deaf peoples experience with music and common misconceptions on deaf people and experiencing music.  Cristina Hartmann wrote an article answering some of the questions people ask deaf people when relating to experiencing music. She states that  "Music is far more than just sound. It creates vibrations, has lyrics, and evokes feelings. Deaf people can experience those things on an equal footing." and proceeded by saying, ...

GIF WORKSHOP

During the day i participated in a workshop which was teaching us how to create a GIF using Illustrator and Photoshop. With the aim to create a GIF which showcased some type of change in form of a letter, we began exploring different practitioners which used animation to create motion typography.  Looking at the designer for Mike Perry Studio had much influence on my GIF.  His work consists of illustrative typography and images, which as they move tell a story, showcasing some sort of narrative through shapes. I found his compositions very much lively as he has a creative use of compact and dense layout in his work, and also uses multiple colours which brings life to his work. I'm also interested in the way in which he manipulates forms, using hand-crafted illustrations and making them transform from shapes to characters and using the warp tool to create these unorthodox and bizarre shapes. MY FINAL GIF As a final GIF I was proud of how it turned out and ...

Exploring ROCK Music

I wanted to delve into the key characteristics of different genres this easter holiday and explore their musical structures, the impact in which they have on society, the content and emotive feelings in which the genres evoke. I began looking deep into rock and roll music and the sub-genres and styles that evolved from it. Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated in the United States in 1950s. It then developed into different styles and branched off into the United Kingdom. Classic Rock and Roll music commonly use a 4/4 time signature while using a verse - chorus form, with a repetitive snare drum.  The main instruments associated with rock are electric guitar, bass and drums . The sound of rock is traditionally centred on the amplified electric guitar , which emerged in its modern form in the 1950s,   and was influenced by the sounds of electric blues  guitarists.   The sound of an electric guitar in rock music is typically supported by an e...

FMP BOOK

This day I spent creating the collages for my Final Major Project book. They consist of questions, and text , which i designed purposefully to make the viewer think of the genre of music the collage would associate with. In doing so the viewers will be forced to make a decision and simultaneously associate colours with the genre. I also added in the text to deceive the viewer, subconsciously making them relate the colours and composition to the genre of music.   FINAL MAJOR PROJECT THEME BOOK

Colours and emotions research

How can we give those with hearing disabilities a way to experience music visually? I wanted to investigate the correlations between music and colour, and explore how practitioners use colour in their works to associate with chords. As my intentions are to create a series of outcomes which stimulate similar emotions, and feelings in which music does, I began researching artists who are influenced by music and other practitioners who use music to support their concepts.  Isaac Newton was a well known scientist who found answers to colour through nature and music. He believed the order of rainbow colours had a harmony, and thought of colours as musical notes. Within this theory he was able to visualise the colour harmonies and the contrasts through the chords, influencing the 'Colour Wheel Theory'.  Melissa S McCracken is an artist who creates synesthetic art to relate to her experience  with music. Synesthetsia refers to the production of a sense impr...

Double Take

Ellen Gallagher Many of her works explore a range of different textures, crossing between both 2D and 3D materials. She follows a colour scheme in her work, which stands out and holds much dominance in her pieces, as they complement well; with the use of black and white photos on brown paper. These very much subtle tones of brown coloured paper allow the black and white photos to stand out, and any other colour she uses to create a clear focus on the main focus of the piece.  all her works being hand crafted, this gives her work a rough and unpolished look. Her use of composition is something in which i find intriguing as she experiments with the placement of the paper to create a space in the collage for the focus of the image to sit in. John Stezaker Stezaker uses photos from magazines, postcards, newspapers and books to create his collages. Similar to Ellen Gallagher he to uses the hand-craft technique, however he takes a much more different approach,...
