Ellen Gallagher
Many of her works explore a range of different textures, crossing between both 2D and 3D materials. She follows a colour scheme in her work, which stands out and holds much dominance in her pieces, as they complement well; with the use of black and white photos on brown paper. These very much subtle tones of brown coloured paper allow the black and white photos to stand out, and any other colour she uses to create a clear focus on the main focus of the piece.
all her works being hand crafted, this gives her work a rough and unpolished look. Her use of composition is something in which i find intriguing as she experiments with the placement of the paper to create a space in the collage for the focus of the image to sit in.
John Stezaker
Stezaker uses photos from magazines, postcards, newspapers and books to create his collages. Similar to Ellen Gallagher he to uses the hand-craft technique, however he takes a much more different approach, with a simplistic style he takes readymade photos and decides to manipulate them and create his own narrative. Through cutting and overlaying other photos and recreating his own story, he was able to alter the images into his own creation.
EXPERIMENTS
This exercise was to help generate ideas for our theme. We were asked to create collages out of our primary images and objects we had brought in that related to our project.
I found this task particularly complicated, as with the short amount of time we had, it became difficult to process my concepts for the collages and that gave less room for decision making. There was no time for being precise, and delicate with my work, just tearing into photos and placing them where I felt best fit in that moment. Although I found this activity complicated, I believe it's important to put designers in a vulnerable spot as it enables you to make quick decisions and pick up pace in the process of creating.
This task I looked into the definition of UNALTERED and ALTERED
and began to explore the differences between both. Unaltered is when something is original, unchanged, pure and natural. In contrast, altered is when something is changed, manipulated, reformed or edited. As i got deeper into these words, i thought of examples to expand my understanding on the words, identifying them with context. The news is an great example for how people's perceptions are altered aswell as imagery. Using technology to wipe out the graphic content when showcasing footage or imagery of battlefields and horrific event's on screen. This allows viewers to view content while also hiding the brutality which actually took place, therefore altering our perceptions of reality. In terms of something being unaltered, the idea of a baby being newly born until it's umbilical cord is cut and is circumcised is where a human becomes altered.unaltered until it is circumcised or changes through environmental or man made causes.
