RHYTHM & REACTION: THE AGE OF JAZZ IN BRITAIN
Today I visited the Two Temple Place to see the Rhythm & Reaction: The Age of Jazz in Britain exhibition. It consisted of paintings, prints, textiles ceramics and instruments which all derived from the genre of jazz. It gave me a chance to explore the style designs and mood in which jazz evoked and see if i could translate these ideas into my work.
I was interested in this magazine cover from 1929 called "Melody Maker" as it embraced the constructivism like style and used, which i noticed, common associated colours with this genre of music (brown, orange and yellow). I was also interested in the composition, as the colours kept the page eye catching and was in unison with the text.
This was another piece which stood out to me as the vast array of colours expressed a sense of joy. Once again the painting is very simplistic and full of layering and 2D figures. This causes me to think about my designs and the style of the compositions in which i could explore and colours.
I also liked the ceramics and textiles which they had displayed. With the use of patterns and colours it helped evoke a sense of harmony and movement; The two colour schemes create a sense of bonding, and fluidity, while the style drawing incorporates mark making and shapes in order to create patterns that look as if they are moving.
